About This Degree

The Master of Science in Business Information Systems program will prepare students with the skills needed to work in the information technology industry. The program is designed as a bridge between business and technology and will be fully geared towards practice with learning experiences grounded in real world contexts. Students will not only learn analytical skills and use software tools that are currently popular in the industry, to find solutions to business problems that are commonly encountered in practice, but also learn how to manage an IT project and see it through to successful completion. As opposed to a pure computer science program, this program caters to the burgeoning need for information systems professionals who understand the business aspects of technology. Graduates of the program will be thoroughly prepared to hit the ground running in the information technology industry.

Admission Requirements

  • The completion of a Bachelor's degree.
  • The minimum requirement for admission to the MS program is 3.0 GPA.
  • Students whose undergraduate GPA is between 2.75-2.99 will be considered for admission and matriculation with the following conditions:
    • Business undergraduate majors with a GPA below 3.0 (2.75-2.99) must take the GMAT and attain a score of 560 (50th percentile) or better.
    • Or, must take BUSI 599 Graduate Business Essentials in the first semester and attain a grade of B to continue in the MS program.
    • Non-business majors must take BUSI 599 Graduate Business Essentials in the first semester and attain a grade of B to continue in the MS or MBA program.
  • Meet all minimum requirements of the Graduate Studies Office. These requirements include: completed application; transcripts; recommendation letters; essay; resume; and test results as required. An interview may be requested.
  • Additional requirements for international students include: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test result, and Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), or World Education Services (WES) evaluation of international transcripts.
  • Graduate courses from other institutions may be accepted with approval of the School of Business.

Demand for Business Information Systems

The Master of Science in Business Information Systems program aims to satisfy current trends in business needs and to give students career opportunities in the lucrative field of information systems. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of computer and information systems managers to grow 11 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations.

The median pay for information systems managers is $142,530 per year as per the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. The World Economic Forum (WEF) reports that the IT skills gap is widening fast with at least 133 million new roles being generated by 2020 due to advances in technology, including AI and other emerging technologies. The WEF also estimates that over 54% of the workforce will require significant reskilling. A recent survey of over 1000 business executives by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) indicates that roughly half of those surveyed believe that the educational system is not doing enough to help close the information technology (IT) skill gap.

Upon the completion of the Master of Science in Business Information Systems program, students should be able to:

  • Analyze a business problem and to apply principles of information systems and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate an information systems solution to meet a given set of requirements in the context of the program鈥檚 discipline.
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  • Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments based on legal and ethical principles.
  • Perform effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program鈥檚 discipline.
  • Support the delivery, use, and management of information systems within an information systems environment.
